Seems like Martinez is trending more toward first base. And his limited 1b experience shows him to be a pretty good defender.
If the team decides not to resign Molina next year and promote Posey, Martinez would provide some insurance and some mentoring with Molina gone.
He has an option for 2010 at $7 mil, so the Giants could keep him beyond this season (and he is only 30).
I kind of like that he is a switch hitter, who is not just a power hitter, but more of a gap hitter. Not sure he would completely solve the team's power issues, but he's a great hitter who drives in runs so it kind of doesn't matter that he's not going to hit 30 bombs a year.
Now, his cost will be much higher than Dye. The Indians will be looking to rebuild by trading him. 4 prospects minimum. Alderson, Sanchez, Bowker, Noonan... something like that. A high ceiling (Alderson), two more advanced guys (Bowker (or maybe Guzman) and Sanchez) and another solid prospect (Noonan).
Price might be too steep... but
Rowand cf
Winn lf
Pablo 3b
Martinez 1b
Schierholtz rf
Molina c
Renteria ss
Uribe 2b
Better... but still probably not a fearsome lineup.
2010 lineup:
Rowand CF
Freddy Sanchez 2b (FA)
Pablo 3b
Martinez 1b
Schierholtz rf
Posey C
Bowker lf
Renteria SS (replaced by Crawford by eoy)
