"I just looked at him and said, 'Sure, let's take our All-American shortstop and slap catcher's gear on him,' " Martin recalled. "I thought he'd look like a Little Leaguer out there. But dad-gum, after five pitches he looked like he had been there his whole life."
He was an all american ss his freshman year at Fla St. We have good prospects coming along at C(Sandoval), 3B(Gillaspie), 2B(Burris, Frandsen), and 1B(Vilallona, Ishikawa). I have no doubt in my mind that Posey could go back to SS without any delay, and in fact might even speed his arrival to the major league level. Not moving Sandoval and Gillaspie would also help them move to the majors more quickly.
I think Vilallona may be at the MLB level by the time he is 20. If so, then the everyday infield of Burris, Gillaspie, Sandoval, Posey, and Vilallona could wind up being one of the most prolific hitting infields in history. It may also be terrific defensively.
I know most of you feel that Posey is just too valuable as a catcher. But Sandoval is proving to be a very good catcher, and we need to fill a hole at SS. I could easily see Posey being a Cal Ripkin type of SS with better hitting, and just as long a career. How valuable would that be to the Giants?
