ROSTER MOVE: Alfonzo down, Holm (?) up
Posted by Andrew Baggarly on July 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy was late to the postgame interview room and acknowledged the club would make a roster move prior to Wednesdayâ€TMs game. It didnâ€TMt take Columbo to figure out catcher Eliezer Alfonzo was heading out. Teammates and coaches were giving him hugs and pep talks after the game. He confirmed heâ€TMs going to Triple-A Fresno. Alfonzo never really had a chance. He had played all of five games (two starts) since the team called him up July 1.

I assumed that Pablo Sandoval was on his way from Double-A, but word around the clubhouse was that Steve Holm is returning. Prior to the game, Bochy said he wants to give Bengie Molina more days off in the second half.

Sandoval, by the way, was 3-for-7 with a home run, a double and six RBIs for Connecticut in an 18-7 victory over Portland (Me.) on Tuesday. The switch-hitting catcher is batting.343 against Eastern League pitching. Thatâ€TMs pretty good for a guy who doesnâ€TMt turn 22 until next month.

So even if it doesnâ€TMt happen tomorrow, it wonâ€TMt be long before we see him. My guess is theyâ€TMll wait until they trade Rich Aurilia, which would allow them to play Sandoval a couple days a week behind Molina at catcher while also finding him at-bats at first base against left-handers.
